Naeem Inayatullah’s paper “Pupils Dilated: Towards a Pedagogy of Emergence” was presented at the workshop Subversive Pedagogies: Radical Possibility in the Academy, at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, February 10-11, 2020.  The paper was presented by conveners Kate Schick and Claire Timperley, as budget constraints disallowed travel.

The paper addresses teachers’ desires to use the classroom as a site for their political activism.  The form is autobiographical and confessional and mostly jargon-free.  It provides an arc in a three decade long teaching career that moves from a naïve hopefulness to a surmounted sense of tragedy.
