Women leaders Series Events focus on intersectionality this weekContributed by Michele Lenhart on 03/03/20 There are three more inspiring events in the 2020 Women Leaders Series that take place before spring break. These events are open to all IC students, and faculty and staff are invited to attend if you are interested, too. A full list of the events that happen after spring break can be found on the Office of Student Engagement website!
Women Leaders Focus Group March 4, 4:00-5:00pm Taughannock Falls Room Let's talk about being a woman student leader at Ithaca College: what are the highs and lows that you have experienced? What resources do you need to help you be more successful on your leadership journey at IC? What do you wish you had known before you took on commitments on campus and in the community? This will be an interactive discussion, so come prepared to share your story and hear the stories of your peers! Hosted by Michele Lenhart, Director of Student Engagement.
Jewel's Catch One Film Screening March 4, 6:00pm Textor 103 The oldest Black owned disco in America is the legacy of businesswoman and activist Jewel Thais-Williams. One of the original safe spaces for both the LGBT and Black communities, her club grew to become known as the "unofficial Studio 54 of the West Coast,” and she became a national role model for how to fight discrimination and serve others. The film is narrated by one of Ithaca College’s most distinguished alumni, actress and activist CCH Pounder. Hosted by the Center for LGBTQ Education, Outreach and Services.
The Journey to Leadership as a Student of Color at a PWI March 5, 12:00-1:00pm Taughannock Falls Room As students of color at persistently/predominately white institution, over time one becomes discouraged and displeased with the campus environment that was set up - as most American systems - to cater to the white cultural diaspora. In other words, it was set up in a way that would benefit our white peers more. Being a women-identifying student provides an added later of challenges when facing spaces that aren't designed for your voice. As seniors at Ithaca College, the BOLD 2.0 cohort hopes that by sharing our lived-experiences and stories about how we rose to leadership, we can inspire women-identifying students, and especially those of diverse backgrounds, to become the leaders and change-makers that our campus is in desperate need of. Presented by the BOLD Women's Leadership Scholars
