The Park Center for Independent Media (PCIM) will host Parker Higgins, Director of Advocacy for the Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 19 in the Park Hall Auditorium. Higgins will discuss how the FPF protects, defends, and empowers public-interest journalism in the 21st century. FPF works to secure and strengthen First and Fourth Amendment rights guaranteed to the press through a variety of avenues, including the development of encryption tools, documentation of attacks on the press, training newsrooms on digital security practices, and advocating for the public’s right to know. The organization manages SecureDrop an open-source whistleblower submission system and the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, a centralized database that helps inform advocacy, journalism, and legal action. Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodation, please contact Brandy Hawley at bhawley@ithaca.edu or 607-274-3590 as soon as possible.
