Updates to Zoom Meetings

Contributed by Jenna Linskens on 04/02/20

Zoom is continuing to make changes to ensure the safety, privacy and security of all Zoom users. You may have noticed some of these changes, while others may not have a more noticeable impact. Here are some of the changes and improvements Zoom has made:

  • Enacted the Virtual Waiting Room to control who can join a class meeting
  • Removed the Facebook login option to protect user data
  • Created a Best Practices for Securing Virtual Classroom resource
  • Enforced a limit on Screen Sharing to “only host” and allowing the host to control who can share during a meeting

Please note that many of these changes were made by Zoom without notice to us. We will continue to provide updates as we learn about changes.

Zoom invites you to read a personal note from Zoom Founder and CEO, Eric S. Yuan speaking to their commitment to address these issues and deliver a platform that Ithaca College and millions of others have come to rely on during this time of remote teaching and learning.

Information Technology has put together a Knowledge Base article on How to Keep Your Zoom Meetings Private.  The document includes best practices for protecting your Zoom meetings from unknown guests, turning off private chats, and removing unwelcome guests.

Information Technology is continuing to review Zoom’s recommendations for best practices and evaluate the Zoom default settings in order to reduce disruption to the campus community.

For questions or support, please contact the Information Technology Service Desk by email servicedesk@ithaca.edu, phone (607)274-1000, or the IT Chat Desk Utility
