Faculty and staff in the department of Physics and Astronomy are using 3D printing technology to help healthcare providers treating COVID-19 patients in New York City.Contributed by Jill Ackerman on 04/03/20
Now, Professor Luke Keller, Associate Professor Matthew Price, Assistant Professor Jerome Fung and Equipment & Laboratory Specialist Jennifer Mellott, are participating in the effort led by the Ithaca Generator makerspace and the Cornell College of Engineering, to make parts for medical personal protective equipment to be distributed to providers treating COVID-19 patients in New York City. These team members are working from their homes using IC Physics Department 3D printing resources to fill a critical public need. I am so impressed with how it all came together, and so quickly. This is a terrific example of Mutual Aid work and something for the rest of us to emulate; let\'s all use the resources and skills we have to help others in this time of chaos and crisis. Kudos to Professors Luke Keller, Matthew Price, and Jerome Fung, and to specialist Jennifer Mellott and administrator Jill Ackerman.

A few days ago, while working remotely from home, I saw a notice online from the Ithaca Generator MakerSpace looking for help with the 3D printing of medical personal protective equipment (PPE). I forwarded this information to the faculty of my department, Physics & Astronomy, because I knew that we have several 3D printers that might be of use. Within 20 minutes, 3 faculty and 1 staff member volunteered to join this effort.
COVID 19 make me proud to be a member of the IC faculty.
