Now that the IC community is fast approaching the end of its first month of ‘Learning, Teaching and Working remotely’, most individuals are settling into a regular routine.  Maintaining physical social distancing is an important tool in limiting the spread of Covid-19; however, ensuring that you avoid isolation and stay virtually connected with your peers will help maintain a ‘normal’ routine.  Social distancing isn’t easy, especially if you’re used to attending class on campus or working in a bustling office environment.

To help ensure an ongoing virtual connection many organizations have utilized the following concepts as ways to stay socially connected while working remotely.

  • Some departments have set up a unique channel within their Microsoft Teams site that provides a centralized location for individuals to post non-work related items that they would normally discuss with their peers.  Having a central repository for ‘happy thoughts’ increases the moral of their team.  A guide for using Teams and setting up a channel within Teams can be found here
  • Regularly scheduling a short attendance optional departmental meeting a few times a week (aka - Town Hall meeting) helps the team members feel connected and functions as a good platform to keep the department up to date with the fast-changing environment.  Many organizations have noted that this format is well received and allows the various areas within their department to effectively highlight what they’ve been working on.

This article is part of a continuing series we’re calling IT@IC Remotely Thinking, consisting of ‘best practices and tips’ presented by the Information Technology department to enhance your remote IC teaching, learning and working experience.  If you have any questions regarding technology to assist in your new remote environment, please contact the Information Technology Service Desk via our new Live Chat, via email: servicedesk@ithaca.edu or by phone (607)274-1000.  Thank you.
