A Summer Institute on increasing flexibility in course design will be held for five weeks starting June 22. The institute will seek to enrich faculty member’s pedagogical and technological knowledge and skills in order to: raise the bar from satisfactory emergency remote teaching to effective online learning; afford more online or blended teaching and learning during semesters, summer and winter breaks; and improve teaching and learning overall.

The institute will involve a series of five modules on topics such as increasing accessibility, engagement, instructor presence and interaction, and inclusion. Each module will have asynchronous and synchronous components. The asynchronous components will remain available once they are introduced. Each module will take 3-5 hours to fully complete and will result in a concrete outcome such as a redesigned assignment, learning activity, or syllabus. Faculty may choose to complete any or all modules, or discrete parts of modules on sub-topics that are of most interest and relevance to their courses.

All modules will address the use of online learning technologies to achieve pedagogical goals, extending what is covered in workshops on basic technology skills (e.g., Sakai, Zoom, VoiceThread), which will be conducted over the summer as well.

One module will be made available each week for five weeks starting June 22. Registration for the modules, free to all faculty, will open soon.

The Summer Institute is a collaboration of the Center for Faculty Excellence, Teaching and Learning with Technology, Student Accessibility Services, and the Library.
