It is with heavy hearts that we share some sad news with the IC community. Don Mooney, an Ithaca College icon, beloved by thousands of students, passed away on May 1st, 2020, after a short illness. In 2017, students, faculty, alumni, and all of our other IC friends nominated Don as one of their favorite Ithaca College icons, celebrating this achievement at IC’s 125th Anniversary celebration. Don was thrilled to receive this special award from the Ithaca College community. In Don's 12+ years of service as a Dining Services employee, he greeted thousands of students into Towers and Terrace Dining Halls. Don was undeniably a familiar face to all that entered the dining hall.
Scott McWilliams, Director of Dining Services, remembers Don’s great devotion to students and the college. “Ithaca College Dining Services is deeply saddened by the news of Don Mooney's passing.Don always knew how to make such a wonderful impact on whoever crossed his path. His passion was making sure that everyone around him was in a better place than he was. The Ithaca College community will miss him dearly. We send our deepest condolences to Don's family and friends.” At the request of the family, there will not be a formal memorial service. Rest in peace, Don. You will always be remembered with great affection by your IC family. Don's sister, Janet Robbins, summed it up nicely. "Don loved this College."

Don was a great Co-worker & a friend to all. He spoke
about his life experiences and knowledge through books, stories and poems so others could learn and make better decisions for themselves. He kept all his important papers in a safe place, under the liner of his hat! He will be missed by many. Rest In Peace my friend and prayers for peace to your family. As a student, I ate at Towers often and I’ll always remember the days I
would sit at a table for lunch with Don. He always shared such great stories about his life and gave meaningful advice. One day he gave me a poem he wrote and kept under his hat which I have held dear to me since then. I’ve wondered about the book of poems he always told me he was working on, and if he completed it. Or if anyone else has a special Don Mooney poem? The one he gave me goes: Before you aspire Towards something You think is higher Remember that the people who love you Do so for who + what you are Not what you may Someday become. I will always remember Don as man with big heart. He would look for me
every morning as clean entrance area outside dining entrance to give me a glass of orange juice or cup of hot cocoa on really cold morning. He would tell me all these stories about his life, talk about what’s in the news or latest issue with his camper. etc. Still remember when really bad weather he would sleep in his camper in parking lot just so he make sure he was here for the students. He was caring when I lost my daughter to car accident. Don, I won’t forget you and say hello to my daughter Kelly for me. My heart, prayers and love go out to his sister that he loved so much and rest of his family and friends. Rest In Peace Don or Captain (some people called him). |

lunch or breakfast with the facilities staff. I noticed he was great with the
students and staff and always wanted to talk IC football. It was always fun
to see Don. For some reason Don thought I was on the football coaching
staff. Don, you will be missed ! Rest peacefully.
