Join the Park Center for Independent Media on Wednesday, July 29 for a webinar on the media environment amid the coronavirus pandemic and ongoing protests against racial injustice. Our speakers will review the coverage of pandemic and protests by the mainstream media and discuss if recent reporting on racial justice protests represents a shift from the traditional underplaying of race in police stories. The webinar will also explore how the pandemic is affecting independent media outlets and what should we expect in the future.

Our panelists include editors at major independent media outlets, a correspondent who was arrested while covering Black Lives Matter protest and a distinguished scholar. Panel discussion will be followed by Q&A.

Andrew Buncombe is chief US correspondent of The Independent. He previously reported from across Asia and before that was a correspondent in Washington DC. He is based in Seattle and is interested in politics, immigration, the environment, and the interface between technology and society. See Mr. Buncombe’s writing here.

Tara L. Conley is an Assistant Professor of Transmedia Storytelling in the School of Communication and Media at Montclair State University. Her research centers Black life in the study and exploration of place, media histories, and technoculture. D.D. Guttenplan is editor of The Nation. He previously covered the 2016 election as the magazine’s editor at large and, for two decades before that, was part of its London bureau. Raza Rumi directs the Park Center for Independent Media and teaches in the journalism department at Ithaca College. He is also a visiting faculty at Cornell Institute for Public Affairs and also affiliated with the Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics, Georgetown University. He has been the editor of Daily Times, The Friday Times and founding editor of NayaDaur Media.
