PCIM Webinar: Journalism in Times of Pandemic & ProtestContributed by Brandy Hawley on 07/28/20 Join the Park Center for Independent Media on Wednesday, July 29 for a webinar on the media environment amid the coronavirus pandemic and ongoing protests against racial injustice. Our speakers will review the coverage of pandemic and protests by the mainstream media and discuss if recent reporting on racial justice protests represents a shift from the traditional underplaying of race in police stories. The webinar will also explore how the pandemic is affecting independent media outlets and what should we expect in the future. Our panelists include editors at major independent media outlets, a correspondent who was arrested while covering Black Lives Matter protest and a distinguished scholar. Panel discussion will be followed by Q&A. Speakers: Andrew Buncombe, Chief US correspondent, The Independent Tara Conley, Ed.D., Assistant Professor, Montclair State University D.D. Guttenplan, Editor, The Nation Amanda Silverman, Editorial Director, Mother Jones Andrew Buncombe is chief US correspondent of The Independent. He previously reported from across Asia and before that was a correspondent in Washington DC. He is based in Seattle and is interested in politics, immigration, the environment, and the interface between technology and society. See Mr. Buncombe’s writing here. Amanda Silverman is the editorial director (newsroom) based in Mother Jones’ San Francisco office. Before joining Mother Jones, Amanda worked as a story editor for Foreign Policy’s print magazine. Raza Rumi directs the Park Center for Independent Media and teaches in the journalism department at Ithaca College. He has been the editor of Daily Times, The Friday Times and founding editor of NayaDaur Media.
