Conversations Across Screen Cultures Interview with IC Alum Dr. Ulises Mejias on September 15Contributed by Patricia Zimmermann on 09/08/20 Conversations Across Screen Cultures, a new online initiative featuring live interviews and discussions with film and media scholars, media artists, and programmers in the Central New York region, launches on September 15 at 6:30pm in an interview that features Dr. Ulises Mejias, Professor of Communication Studies and Director of the Institute for Global Engagement at SUNY-Oswego. Dr. Mejias is an Ithaca College alum with BS and MS degrees from the Park School. Dr. Mejias will speak about his new book, co-written with Nick Couldry, The Costs of Connection: How Data Is Colonizing Human Life and Appropriating It for Capitalism. The book is “a profound exploration of how the ceaseless extraction of information about our intimate lives is remaking both global markets and our very selves. This represents an enormous step forward in our collective understanding of capitalism’s current stage. Challenging, urgent, and bracingly original.” (Naomi Klein, Rutgers University) The initiative is a collaboration between faculty from Ithaca College, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival, the Cine con Cultura festival, and the Syracuse University Human Rights Film Festival. Sessions will feature open discussion and dialogue with students and faculty in attendance. Please contact Dr. Leah Shafer (shafer@hws.edu) or Dr. Patricia Zimmerman (patty@ithaca.edu) for Zoom link.
