Composer Alvin Singleton is 2020-2021 Karel Husa Visiting Professor of CompositionContributed by Jorge Grossmann on 09/14/20 Composer Alvin Singleton's music has been performed worldwide by orchestras such as the Atlanta, Detroit, and Cincinnati Symphony orchestras. A former Fulbright Scholar and Guggenheim Fellow he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2014. Singleton's music is soulful, with an understated simplicity that I particularly prize. Despite the studied economy of his means and the set character of his images, the music is never cold ... nor abstract. It glows with warmth, it hovers in the air, it paces itself with a glacial but palpably intuitive momentum. It refuses to pander to either academicism or populism, but is so honest and self-assured that listeners flock to it anyway. A Q&A session with Alvin Singleton, open to the campus community, will take place on September 22, 2020 at 1:05 p.m. Those interested in attending please email Becky Turro: rturro@ithaca.edu. |
