Are you an aspiring music major or minor? Are you curious about the building blocks of music? Then sign up for Fundamentals of Music Theory during the Winter Term!

Fundamentals of Music Theory (MUTH 10100) is a 1-credit Liberal Arts course which meets Monday-Friday from 10:00-10:50 AM during Winter Term 2021 (January 4-22). In this class, students will learn about the building blocks of music: pitch, rhythm, and harmony. During our synchronous class sessions, students will practice reading and writing basic musical structures, interact with their classmates to analyze and write short musical compositions, and participate in whole-class discussions. There are no textbooks to purchase for this class; students will watch short introductory videos and complete readings from free online materials in preparation for class meetings. Daily homework assignments will reinforce concepts from class and prepare students for the final exam.

Fundamentals of Music Theory is required for both the music major and minor (with a minimum grade of B). It is also a prerequisite for Music Theory I (MUTH 12200), which is taught in Spring 2021. While this class is geared towards music majors and minors, everyone is welcome to join the class. Students considering adding a music major or minor, and first-year music majors who deferred admission to spring, are particularly encouraged to take Fundamentals this winter. If you have questions, please email the instructor, Dr. Crystal Peebles (cpeebles@ithaca.edu).
