The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) seeks a cohort of faculty, as well as staff members who have teaching responsibilities (broadly defined), to participate in the 2021 Antiracism Institute. In the Institute we will build on and go beyond work done at IC and in the Ithaca community regarding diversity, inclusion, and equity. We will address racism head on and adopt a non-neutral approach in our pedagogy, curriculum, campus culture, and community. As Ibram X. Kendi states, “The opposite of‘racist’ isn’t ‘not racist.’”

The Institute is an interdisciplinary learning community, and a space for difficult dialogues on race. It will begin with a five-week common experience: our first cohort used a five-week MOOC (massive open online course) developed at Cornell University, for instance. Participants will then co-design learning experiences—for example, dialogues, readings, guest facilitators, and workshops—for the remainder of the spring and early fall. Finally, participants will develop action plans to bring what they have learned to their departments and schools.

The Center will provide resources and cover any fees for programs, such as a MOOC.

Faculty and staff members are invited to express their interest at Antiracism Institute by December 1. Contact Gordon Rowland, CFE Director (rowland@ithaca.edu) with any questions and/or to discuss the Institute beforehand.
