The Division of Student Affairs and Campus Life (SACL) will be launching its Non-Academic Program Review Process on Wednesday, November 11, 2020.

Spearheaded by the Division’s Leadership Team, this process will align with the College’s “Ithaca Forever” strategic plan, which calls for comprehensive program reviews in both academic and non-academic areas in an on-going effort to optimize the college to service a student body of approximately 5,000, while also maintaining the highest quality of student-focused support.

The SACL Leadership Team will begin this work by welcoming two outside facilitators, Katie Clark and Carl Sveen, who spearheaded the creation of the Center of Innovation and Leadership at Swarthmore College. Using a “Design Thinking” approach, these facilitators will spend four meeting sessions with the SACL Leadership Team over the final weeks of the fall semester. Following each meeting session, the SACL Leadership Team will continue to hold dialogue and discuss strategies at both the divisional and departmental level.

Ensuring a student-first approach and maintaining equity will be foremost in steering this review process. Following the conclusion of this facilitator series, the division will have a set of prioritized guiding principles to use in determining whether adjustments to our organizational structure and various support programs is necessary to better service our student population. A small workgroup will be developed, comprised of members of the SACL Leadership Team, to put together a draft proposal of action steps for the division. This process will be transparent with each succeeding draft of the proposal shared with the entire division in order to solicit and incorporate as much feedback as possible. The tentative timeline for a finalized proposal is set for the month of March.

**Learn More About the Facilitators**

Katie Clark is an experienced higher education administrator with a demonstrated history of working to support students in their personal growth and development. Katie is the Assistant Dean for Integrated Learning and Leadership and the founding Director of the Center for Innovation and Leadership (CIL) at Swarthmore College. The CIL cultivates co-curricular opportunities at the intersection of leadership, entrepreneurship, and management for students to develop into creative, adaptable, ethical individuals. She has a certificate from the Executive Program in Social Innovation Design from the University of Pennsylvania's Weitzman School of Design and School of Social Policy and Practice. She has been trained by Stanford University’s School Teaching and Learning Studio in Design Thinking, trained by the NCAA in Student Athlete Leadership, and is certified in Interpersonal Leadership Style Assessments. Katie has a M.S.Ed in Higher Education Administration from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education and a BA from Smith College in Northampton, Mass., where she is a trustee emerita.

Carl Sveen is the Assistant Director of the Center for Innovation and Leadership (CIL) at Swarthmore College. Carl has focused on program development, student engagement, and expanding the design education curriculum through campus projects and special initiatives. He oversees assessment processes, communication, and advises the CIL student Intern Program. Carl recently completed the Executive Program in Social Innovation Design through the Stuart Weitzman School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania and is currently on the teaching team as a Teaching Fellow. He has received training in design thinking at the Teaching and Learning Studio at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University. Carl graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education with a M.S.Ed in Higher Education Administration and a BS from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill.
