Public Health Message: Staying Vigilant in the Weeks AheadContributed by Dan DeCaria on 11/17/20 As we continue to close-in on the final few weeks of the Fall 2020 semester, it is important to reflect on all we have been able to accomplish over the past nine months. Despite facing unprecedented circumstances, our campus community has repeatedly risen to the occasion to answer the challenges posed by the pandemic. From a modified educational experience to connecting with one another and the college in unique ways, the resilience and unbridled spirit of our Ithaca College family has never been showcased more aptly. As we begin to shift the focus to our much-anticipated spring reopening in the weeks ahead, it is important that we remain attuned and accountable to good public health practice! Now is not the time to let up! In recent weeks, COVID-19 cases have risen to all-time highs throughout the country, our local region, and in our own Ithaca College community. We are all in this together, so please remain vigilant to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and consider the following recommendations in the weeks ahead: Be tested to know your COVID-19 status Do your part to limit spread of COVID-19 by being tested, even if you do not have any symptoms. If you are in the Ithaca area, it is encouraged to sign-up for testing at the Athletics & Events Center on Monday, November 23 or Tuesday, November 24, and continue to test weekly throughout the month of December. Also be mindful that a negative test result is not a signal to relax compliance with recommended public health behaviors. Limit gatherings and avoid travel if possible As per public health policy, New York State has currently mandated a 10-individual limit to any indoor or outdoor gatherings at private residences. If you must travel outside of New York State, or the contiguous states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or Vermont, be sure to adhere to the New York State Travel Advisory. Practice good public health behaviors, even with family The ensuing weeks are traditionally a time shared among family and friends. Please be mindful of continuing to practice good public health behaviors. Family gatherings have been proven to be a primary contributor to COVID-19 spread. Maintaining physical distance, practicing good hand hygiene and using face coverings are still the best ways to protect yourself, as well as family and friends in these spaces. Please stay committed and continue to keep personal and public health a priority during the coming weeks! Rosanna Ferro, Ed.D. Vice President for Student Affairs & Campus Life Christina Moylan Director of Public Health Emergency Preparedness
