Maya recently won a poster contest and her work will be on display at Poster House, a museum in NYC dedicated to posters,  in conjunction with the Swiss Consulate of New York City to complement their current exhibit on the Swiss Grid!

"Attached is the image of the winning poster, which was part of a series for my Graphic Design II class titled “Weather Report”. We were tasked with creating a weather report for any city of our choice, while utilizing elements of the Swiss Grid and geometric non-representational shape. The Swiss International Movement is a graphic design style that was popularized by designers in Switzerland, postwar around the 1950s. It utilizes asymmetric layouts with a grid system, as well as sans-serif typography. Overall, this style stresses cleanness, readability, and objectivity, and still continues to influence design theory today.

I started this project with thinking about the Ferris wheel in Montreal, which led to many iterations of circles throughout this series. You can see the rest of the series here: (https://mayaerodgers.com/weather-report).

When I chose “partly cloudy” as my weather report to include, I was inspired by the repetition of the circle shapes found in the Ferris wheel. I played around with the transparency and the text, to make it look as though the words “partly cloudy” were being obstructed by clouds.  You can see the grid system used in both the circle as well as the alignment on the different text, which happens to be a sans serif font, Helvetica Neue.

Poster House, a museum in NYC dedicated to posters, ran a contest in conjunction with the Swiss Consulate of New York City to complement their current exhibit on the Swiss Grid. I was awarded first place in the competition, with an honorarium of $1,000 and my work will be exhibited in the lobby of the building."
