The Department of Art History is pleased to announce that two faculty—Professor Jennifer Jolly and Assistant Professor Risham Majeed—have published essays in this March 2021 issue of the Art Bulletin, the flagship journal of the discipline of Art History and its professional organization, the College Art Association.

Dr. Jolly’s article, “The Aesthetics of Conflict: Perspective and Anamorphosis in Siqueiros’s Art of the 1930s,” analyzes Mexican Muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros’s application of principles of dialectical materialism and experiments with perspective as a means to politically engage his viewers during this conflict-filled historical period.  At issue is the question, under what conditions can works of art effect their spectators? She presented an overview of this project at the Provost’s Colloquia in Fall 2019.

Dr. Majeed’s essay, “Expanding Artistic Geographies” is a review of two major exhibits: “Caravans of Gold, Fragments in Time” (which travelled to Evanston, Toronto, and Washington DC) and “Sahel: Art and Empires on the Shores of the Sahara” (at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York).  The essay examines the place of historical African art within the category “Medieval Art,” and the exhibitions’ efforts to both historicize and locate African art within a field of rich global exchange.
