Organizers of the 2nd Annual HSHP Interprofessional Education (IPE) Case Competition and Hackathon are pleased to announce the winning teams from our virtual event held on March 27th. Each team was tasked to address either a physical, emotional, or community health problem in Tompkins County due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Our winners, for their entry, Tompkins County Storybook Walk Program, were McKinley Walsh (Public and Community Health), McKenzie Coleman (Health Sciences, Food and Nutrition), Daniel Gonzalez (Health Sciences, Planned Clinical), and Julia Cohen (Speech-Language Pathology). Second place award winners were Juliette Vetare (Public and Community Health), Jocelyn Pawcio (Public and Community Health), Claudia Burlinson (Health Sciences, Planned Clinical), and Maria Caminiti (Exercise Science, Sport Sciences). The third-place award went to Holly Riccio (Public and Community Health), Liane Wilson (Health Care Management), and Gabriela Urbaez-Mendez (Exercise Science, Medical Sciences).

The competition was a wonderful success.  Forty-four students from 11 majors participated in the two-day event.  Congratulations to all of our participants! During the two days we had nine faculty members from six different departments, and 10 alumni and community members assist as organizers, judges, and expert consultants. Two pre-competition resource meetings involved seven additional alumni and community members.

We are grateful for the depth of support and the enthusiasm and vigor of the students, organizers, and the School of HSHP. It was truly a special event showcasing the benefits of interprofessional collaboration, and certainly a highlight in the days of Covid-19.

Special thanks to Dr. Karen Edwards (Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education) to whom the competition was dedicated. Her tireless work, infectious enthusiasm, and remarkable skill enabled the entire competition to happen. Thank you, Karen!
