WHAT IS DANCE FOR THE CAMERA? Also known as videodance, dance film, and screendance, the genre of dance for the camera encompasses a wide range of formats including Hollywood movie musicals, the avant-garde and experimentalism, narratives, and documentaries. The history of cinema is closely entwined with dance. Well before the pandemic shifted content to online, the genre has been growing exponentially. The films are created expressly for the medium of the monitor rather than filming something created for the stage, transforming a three-dimensional art into the two-dimensions of the screen.
