Learning Management System - Implementation Update #5

The LMS Implementation Team is making rapid progress in our transition from Sakai to Canvas. Here are some highlights of what we have accomplished so far, what we are working on currently, and what your next steps are regarding this transition:

What we have done  

  • Prepared and set up the technical side of the IC Canvas platform  
  • Curated self-paced training materials for faculty 
  • Collected feedback from 100+ pilot participants  
  • Prepared resources for IC users who can call Canvas Support for assistance
  • Prepared documentation and sent communications to Sakai Project Site creators/maintainers for moving content out of Sakai and into an alternative platform (transfer must be completed by September 2021)  

  What we are doing  

  • Finalizing details for the IDEAL Faculty Summer Institute to be held May 24-28  
  • Supporting faculty who are teaching a pilot course in Canvas over summer   
  • Working with our vendor to complete a bulk migration of Sakai courses to Canvas; including Fall 2020, Winter 2021, Spring 2021, and Summer 2021 academic course sites (scheduled to begin on Monday, May 17 and continue through August)
  • Preparing documentation to help faculty use migrated course(s)/content to design Fall 2021 courses 
  • Preparing documentation for students to guide them through steps to save resources/files from Sakai to an alternative platform (transfer must be completed by December 2021)  
  • Continuing to modify IC's Canvas platform and prepare for official launch in August 2021  

Your Next Steps

To get timely updates on the transition and a full project timeline, see the project website https://ithaca.edu/lmsproject   

  • After May 11, faculty will be provided with information to log in to Canvas for a sneak peek at the new LMS and a "Hello Canvas Faculty Guide" to familiarize themselves with Canvas and explore the self-paced training materials.
  • After May 19, faculty will be able to see their Fall 2021 courses in Canvas, with a default course template applied and directions to modify the template.
  • After May 24, the LMS Team will provide faculty with a form to request the automatic migration of courses, from outside the window of semesters, to be moved to Canvas in a second wave of migrations which will take place in July.
