Ithaca College

Beginning on Monday, June 14th, the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management will be conducting a sweep of the campus for the purpose of removing bicycles and bicycle parts that are abandoned and/or locked to anything other than a bicycle rack. The sweep is being conducted to improve campus safety, maximize the availability of bike parking resources, and improve the beauty of our campus environment.

According to Ithaca College Bicycle Policy, a bicycle is considered abandoned when 'it is found under circumstances which reasonably indicate that it has been abandoned (e.g., it appears to be inoperable and/or it does not appear to have been moved for an extended period of time).' 

Also listed in the Ithaca College Bicycle Policy is how to appropriately secure your bicycle:

“Cyclists are expected to secure their bicycles in the bicycle racks. Ithaca College has bicycle racks that are located throughout the campus. Bicycles secured to fences, trees, signposts, stair railings or locations other than bicycle racks may impounded. Locks damaged in the removal will be the responsibility of the owner. Unsecured bicycles may be impounded for safekeeping.”

Bicycles will be tagged and after seven days any bike that has not been moved to an appropriate location and/or removed will be confiscated.  Impounded bicycles will be stored for a period not less than 90 days and in accordance with New York State Personal Property Law.

The campus community can help in this effort by reporting any suspected abandoned or wrongly secured bicycles to parking@ithaca.edu.
