The work is a multimedia and live music reconception of the classic silent documentary Nanook of the North (Roberty Flaherty, USA, 1922) to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Robert Flaherty Film Seminars The Arctic Requiem oratorio is based on the writings of Frances Flaherty. The Benedictus chant is comprised of all 2, 642 titles of films screened at the Flaherty Seminars over the last 50 years.
Arctic Requiem is a special commission by Ithaca College, with support from the Division of Interdisciplinary and International Studies, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Women Direct, School of Music, Office of the Provost, and the Roy H. Park School of Communications. Additional support provided by the Experimental Television Center's Presentation Funds program supported by the New York State Council on the Arts.
