The Health Center has recently held a number of seasonal influenza immunization clinics for faculty, staff, and students.  We have been pleased with the enthusiastic turnout for these clinics, which demonstrates a real commitment to maintaining a healthy living and learning community. In just two weeks the Health Center has given nearly as many flu shots as we administered during all of last year.

There are 27 million slaves in the world today. People forced to work without pay, under threat of violence and unable to walk away. Sometimes the slave holder ‘pays’ a few grains of rice to keep the slaves alive, or uses a bogus payment that the slave holder reclaims at the end of the month. But the end result is what slavery is today and has always been—one person controlling another and then forcing them to work. As big and ugly as it is, we can end slavery.

The Handwerker Gallery is in need of fashion magazines for a series of workshops on mass media and gendered identity given by artist Dawn Hunter on September 30. Donations can be left at the Gallery during opening hours:  Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.; Thursday, 10.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.; and weekends from noon to 5.00 p.m. The gallery is closed to the public on Tuesdays, but can accept donations between 11.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m., as well as 3.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m.  For more information on Hunter and her work see www.ithaca.edu/handwerker/exhibitions or www.dawnhunterart.com.

 What is a ZAP!?

A ZAP! is an educational panel discussion that centers around individuals representing a range of sexual and gender identities and expressions - including those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and straight.


Each panelist shares a personal story as an introduction. Then people in the audience are invited to ask questions and start a dialogue with the panel members.

Rachel Poczatek, B.S., '08, M.S., '09 and Hanna Weiss, B .S. '08. are the first Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education (HPPE) students to sit for and pass the national certification exam for Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES). The exam was given in April 2009.

World/Classical percussion group Loop 2.4.3, who performed at Cornell University two years ago, will returnto Ithaca to celebrate the release of their new CD, Zodiac Dust, with a performance at 8:15 p.m. on Friday, September 25, in Ford Hall at Ithaca College.  Loop 2.4.3's performance is funded in part by the Tri-Fund, which is jointly supported by the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Life, The Office of the President, and the Office of the Provost.

Jazz saxophonist Michael Titlebaum will give a free recital on Thursday, September 24 at 8:15 pm in the Hockett Family Recital Hall at Ithaca College. The Rod Serling Conference: Celebrating 50 Years of the Twilight Zone, a two-day conference sponsored by the Park School of Communications, will be held October 2 and 3.

While registrations are now being accepted for the two-day event -- which features presentations of academic papers, panel discussions, and screenings -- there will also be a number of events free and open to the campus and Ithaca community (first-come, first-served).

Ithaca College will launch the inaugural Peggy R. Williams Difficult Dialogues Symposium on Wednesday, Oct. 7, with a presentation by Marc Ellis (photo at right), director of the Center for Jewish Studies at Baylor University. Serving as a respondent will be Sanford Gutman, professor emeritus of history at SUNY Cortland. The symposium, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 8 p.m. in Emerson Suites, Phillips Hall.
