Randi Millman-Brown has a series of ten color photographs displayed in the Center for Faculty Excellence this spring. Randi is the Visual Resources Curator in the Department of Art History at Ithaca College.

We, the faculty of Ithaca College’s Department of Modern Languages & Literatures can no longer, and will no longer, remain silent. We declare that we stand together with refugees from all corners of the globe and affirm our commitment to welcoming all immigrants of all nations to this campus and to our country.

As professors we teach a variety of languages, literatures, and cultures. Among these, we count Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Latin and Spanish. We support several majors and minors and programs including: Jewish Studies, Latin American Studies, Latino/a Studies, Muslim Studies, and Women & Gender Studies.

All faculty planning to conduct research or classroom activity involving live vertebrate animals for research and/or teaching must obtain prior approval from the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) before undertaking that activity.  This committee provides federally-mandated oversight of all activities that have a direct impact on the well-being of animals.

All faculty planning to conduct research or classroom activity involving any kind of nucleic acids or any potentially bio-hazardous material, including pathogens, biological toxins, or human cells, tissues, organs or fluids must obtain prior approval from the Institutional Biosafety Committee before undertaking that activity. This committee provides federally-mandated oversight of activities that present risk of infection or illness in humans.

Summer Grants for Faculty Research are intended to support post-terminal degree scholarly endeavors for full-time continuing Ithaca College faculty and faculty regularly employed on at least a half-time basis. Awards provide $3,350 in compensation for eight weeks or full-time research. Proposals are due in the Center for Faculty Excellence, 316 Gannett Center, by Wednesday, February 15. Full-time, continuing faculty members are invited to submit proposals to the Center for Faculty Excellence for Center for Faculty Research and Development (CFRD) released time during the Spring 2018 semester.

Instructional Development Fund (IDF) grants fall into one of two categories.  Direct Course Enhancement and Diversity/International Projects.  Proposals are due in the Center for Faculty Excellence, 316 Gannett Center, February 15 and April 15.  If the 15th falls on a weekend, proposals will be due the next week day.  Guidelines and application forms may be found at https://www.ithaca.edu/cfe/.

We want to support the great work of the Modern Languages and Literatures Department by offering excellent peer tutors in French, Italian, and Spanish. 

We have Spanish tutors, but we do not have sufficient tutors for French and Italian!

The executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Friday, instituting a 90-day ban on admitting citizens of Libya, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen into the United States, has the potential to negatively affect our Ithaca College community and, conceivably, the entire higher education community. I join with academic leaders from across the country in expressing my concerns about the impact this executive order will have on the members of our campus community.

"Gender Revolution: A Journey with Katie Couric": a community screening and discussion February 8th, in Textor 101, from 7-9 pm. Free and open to the public.

In January 2017, National Geographic published a special  issue on gender, featuring photos, text, and graphics related to gender expressions around the world. This was to be followed by a TV special in February - Gender Revolution: A Journey with Katie Couric. IC has acquired the documentary for a special community screening of this program, to be held on February 8th, in Textor 101, from 7-9 pm. A discussion will follow the 90-minute screening and be led by Carla Golden, Coordinator of Women’s and Gender Studies and Luca Maurer, Program Director of the LGBT Center. Golden and Maurer will bring an intersectional feminist/queer critique to this mainstream production.
