If you have not already done so, all e-mail client users must change the outgoing (SMTP) server settings in order to send e-mail messages on the new system. If you have not already changed your settings, the instructions are below. Webmail users do not need to make any changes.

Thunderbird

  1. Open the Tools menu
  2. Select Account Settings
  3. Select Outgoing Server (SMTP)
  4. In the list on the right, select the outgoing server (icmail.ithaca.edu)
  5. Click the Edit button
  6. Under Security and Authentication, put a check in the checkbox next
  7. to "Use name and password"
  8. Enter your e-mail username in the "User Name" field (e.g., John Doe would enter jdoe)
  9. For the "Use secure connection" setting, select the TLS radio button
  10. At the top of the window, verify that the Port is set to 25 (if off campus or using a laptop, manually change the port to 587)
  11. Click OK to save your new SMTP (outgoing) server settings
  12. Click OK again to close the Account Settings window

Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger)

  1. Open the Mail menu
  2. Choose Preferences...
  3. Click the Accounts button along the top row of the dialog box
  4. Make sure Account Information is selected
  5. Click on the Server Settings button (bottom right)
  6. Change the Server port setting to 25 (if off campus or using a laptop, change the port to 587)
  7. Set Authentication to Password
  8. Enter your username, but do not enter your password
  9. Click OK
  10. Close the Preferences dialog box
  11. Click Save to save your changes

Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard)

  1. Open the Mail menu
  2. Choose Preferences...
  3. Click the Accounts button along the top row of the dialog box
  4. Make sure Account Information is selected
  5. Click on the drop-down menu next to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
  6. Choose Edit Server List
  7. Make sure the outgoing mail server icmail.ithaca.edu is selected
  8. Click Advanced
  9. Change the Server port setting to 25 (if off campus or using a laptop, change the port to 587)
  10. Make sure the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) checkbox is checked
  11. Set Authentication to Password
  12. Enter your username, but do not enter your password
  13. Click OK
  14. Close the Preferences dialog box
  15. Click Save to save your changes

Remember ITS will never ask for your password or any other personal information.
