Greener Switch on Campus

Contributed by Lisa Belokur on 11/04/10

You will soon be noticing a change in the toilet paper and paper towels we provide on campus. This will include a change in the dispensers as well.

Facilities Services is very excited about our move to Tork for our toilet tissue and paper towels.  We chose to make this switch because of cost savings over the old system plus we believe it is a better quality of paper and a much improved dispensing system, and we think you'll agree.

SCA, the manufacturer of Tork products was also ranked as the second greenest company in the world, just behind a Swedish wind turbine company. Each year Tork recycles 750,000 tons of paper, of which 400,000 tons is post consumer waste. 750,000 tons of wastepaper is enough to cover 234 football fields three feet high in wastepaper, including end zones. If that same volume was concrete, you could build 31 Sears Towers!!

Researching our paper choices carefully we were most impressed with Tork’s processes and the high quality of their product. If you would like to read about the company’s sustainable commitment go to:  http://www.torkusa.com/campaigns/Tork-Green-Seal-expansion/   and   http://www.torkusa.com/environment/our-holistic-process/

All of the dispensers we are changing to are ADA compliant and the paper towel dispensers are touch-less without the use of electricity or batteries.  Please understand that the change out of all the dispensers throughout campus will take the entire semester and many students will not see the new dispensers in the residence halls until the start of the spring semester.  Any questions, concerns or if you would like more information please feel free to contact Lisa Belokur in the office of Facilities at 274-3225.

Thanks so much for the better quality paper -- it makes a big difference and we are already seeing less mess on the counters and floors in our public restrooms in the Library. The old stuff was too cheap and thin and came apart in wet hands. This is much better. Less waste, less mess, happier hand washers.

I'm not as keen on the black TP dispensers -- too easy to not notice it's empty until it's too late (can't see through the dark plastic). Oops!

Kudos to facilities for this change. Tork is indeed a great company and their use
of post-consumer products is truly impressive. We can feel good about our
conservation progress with this move. I really like the paper towel dispensers, as
there are no jams anymore. I do wish the toilet paper had better perforations,
though! Small and easy price to pay!

I for one am not impressed with the change. The new dispensers were generally installed in the same location as the old ones and with the difference in size, they sometimes do not fit appropriately in the space they're in or make it awkward to get to the paper.

The paper towel dispensers are no better than the old ones as you still cannot pull down on the paper towels with wet hands and do anything more than tear off small pieces.

The toilet paper dispensers do not have a jagged strip in the most logical spot for tearing the paper off (the ends) and combined with the lack of perforations in the paper, the paper does not tear off very well.
