Ithaca College

The Faculty Development Committee seeks nominations for Faculty Excellence Awards by March 25, 2011. This year, we are fortunate to offer five awards, each for $1,500. In order to be eligible for these awards, a candidate must be a full-time faculty member who has completed at least one year of employment at Ithaca College and who will be full time (TE or NTEN) during the 2011-2012 academic year. 

The Faculty Excellence Awards for 2009-2010 were awarded to the following faculty:

• Susan Allen-Gil, Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences, School of H&S, for helping to develop an innovative curriculum and a college-wide sustainability movement that is now recognized worldwide. She also led the Environmental Studies Program to full departmental status.
• Barney Beins, Professor, Department of Psychology, School of H&S, for his leadership in the teaching of psychology and being in the forefront of efforts to integrate liberal arts education into psychology courses, and also to bring effective psychology teaching to high schools. His textbook on Research Methods is in its second edition.
• Keith Kaiser, Associate Professor, Department of Music Education, School of Music, for being a "master teacher," whose interest in lifelong music participation integrates performance with teaching, research, and service to the community and the profession, including work with children with hearing impairments.
• Luke Keller, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, School of H&S, for bringing national recognition to Ithaca College by designing an optical system and developing a software package for FORCAST, a digital infrared camera that will be used on the NASA Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA).
• Michael B. Smith, Assistant Professor, Department of History, School of H&S, for bringing a rich immersion in the scholarship of teaching and learning back to the college as a Carnegie Fellow. His students have engaged in projects with Longview residents, economically disadvantaged people, and the History Center in Tompkins County.
