Michael Smith's (History/Environmental Studies and Sciences) co-edited volume Citizenship Across the Curriculum cited in new Department of Education report.Contributed by Mark Temelko on 01/12/12 Citizenship Across the Curriculum was cited as "a ground-breaking book" in "A Crucible Moment: College Learning & Democracy’s Future." This report from The National Task Force on Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement is an urgent call for higher education in the United States to reinforce its civic mission at a time when vocationalism too often dominates the discussion about the value of a college education. The report was released at a White House convening on the subject on Tuesday. I'd have to agree with the report's assessment. The book Citizenship across the Curriculum is a valuable resource for educators across the disciplines. In keeping with the college's focus on interdisciplinarity and on educating thoughtful, engaged citizens, I recommend that all IC faculty and administrators read it. Kudos to Professor Michael Smith and his fellow editors, and to the writers of the thoughtful and interesting chapters.
