As many of you know, Leslie Schettino, Director of Ithaca College’s Office of Student Disability Services, has been in a long and courageous struggle with life-threatening illness. I am deeply saddened by the news I share with you today, that Leslie passed away yesterday evening.

All who had the pleasure of knowing and working with Leslie know the depth of her commitment to our students, and her willingness to advocate for those with special needs. Leslie began her work with disabilities services at Ithaca in 1994, and served as Director starting in September of 1999. Her leadership in this area has made a great difference for hundreds of our students over the years, and her presence on our campus will be greatly missed.

Human Resources will be making arrangements for EAP availability to support college employees affected by this sad news; counseling and support for students will also be available through the Center for Counseling and Wellness. Muller Chapel is open to anyone wishing to have a quiet space for reflection during this time, and anyone wishing to talk with a Chaplain is welcome to call the Chapel for assistance.

Leslie leaves behind many loving friends and family members, including her husband Joe Schettino, son Christopher and daughter Maria. Services will be held Saturday, April 14, in Dryden at the Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main Street, with visiting hours from 12:00 to 2:00 and a remembrance ceremony at 2:00.

On behalf of the entire College, I offer my sincere condolences to Leslie’s colleagues, family and friends.

Leslie worked tirelessly and passionately to improve accommodations for students with disabilities and to raise awareness and understanding of disability as a lived experience. She made Ithaca College a better place. A sad, sad loss. Rest in peace.

I am so very sad to hear this. Leslie was the kindest, most generous, and
good-natured person I ever encountered in my 20 years at IC. This is a huge
loss to the campus and the world at large. God speed, Leslie. I will miss you.

Leslie's presence could light up a room more than anyone I know. Her down-to-earth, tell-it-like-it is personality, her humor, her fierce advocacy for all students, her warmth and big heart, all will be greatly missed.

A tremendous loss to our community. Leslie was one of the kindest and
most student centered persons I've ever known. And that's saying quite
a bit on this campus, where we have so many caring individuals. My
thoughts and prayers go out to her family and to our community.

Leslie's dedication, leadership, and collegiality, I remember most. Leslie was extremely kind and so welcoming when I started working at IC in 2008. I will miss her sense of humor and positive outlook. The Office of State Grants staff and students greatly benefited from her service to students. I will always cherish fond memories of Leslie's spirit and courage within our community.
