ITS is pleased to announce that Outlook 2010 for Windows and Outlook 2011 for Macintosh are now supported for email. Outlook is the email client that comes with the Microsoft Office suite of software.

Initially, ITS will be providing support for the transition from Thunderbird and Apple Mail, as well as basic support for email functions only. We are still in the planning stages for the Oracle Calendar migration, and people who currently use Oracle Calendar should NOT use Outlook for any calendar functions at this time. ITS is advising users to switch to Outlook for email prior to the calendar migration in order to avoid having to become familiar with both a new email and new calendar program at the time of the calendar migration.

Important Notes:

  • Users of older versions of Microsoft Office (version 2007 for Windows and version 2008 for Macintosh) must upgrade Office before beginning to use Outlook. Older versions of Office will no longer be supported after the end of 2012. See the following guides for upgrade instructions:
  • Oracle Calendar users should not use Outlook for calendar functions. Though subject to change, ITS is targeting the winter break time frame for the migration of calendar data to the Microsoft Exchange environment.
  • Once Outlook is being used for both email and calendar functions, ITS will begin providing more advanced support for those functions, including workshops.
  • ITS also fully supports Outlook Web App through myHome. For people who find it convenient to access their email through myHome, there is no requirement to switch to the Microsoft Office Outlook email client.
  • Support for Thunderbird and Apple Mail will end in June 2013.
  • Users who have "local" email are advised to move it to the Microsoft servers prior to configuring Outlook (instructions are provided in the transition guides, below).

Outlook Transition Guides

Note that Microsoft Outlook is a powerful and sophisticated email and calendaring tool with many advanced features. ITS has only documented the basic configuration steps along with some information specifically for transitioning from Thunderbird and Apple Mail to Outlook. For clear and detailed instructions about the myriad features available within Outlook, the Help files (look for the blue circle with the "?" mark at the top right of the screen) are a great resource.

2-3 years ago, I was forced to move my mail from MS Outlook to Thunderbird. Now I have to move my mail BACK from Thunderbird to MS Outlook. Can you please just leave it there?

Also, I will need support to move my calendar items, some set as far out as May, out of my Oracle client into whatever will be the new client. Having nowhere else to put such items for now, they are all still in Oracle calendar.

We are given tools to support our work -- and then penalized for coming to rely on them! I'd like to spend more time doing my work and less time fiddling over and over with the tools.

Karin,

The old email system had a relatively small email quota, so some users had to store their "extra" email locally. The new system has 10GB of space, so going forward we expect that the majority of users will be able to store all of their email on the email servers.

As far as Oracle Calendar data being moved, ITS is still in the planning stages for that, and more information will be announced in the coming weeks.

Why wasn't Gmail more strongly considered?

Please see these FAQs (https://www.ithaca.edu/its/traindoc/faqs/category/294/), including the 3rd question "Why didn't we outsource to Google?"
