This original adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan's 1884 opera about feminism, philanthropy, and higher education honors Cornell University's Sesquicentennial.

Set in Upstate New York after the Civil War, Princess Ida or Minerva's Academy investigates the social and political milieu of Cornell's founding, reproduces the campus culture of such regional women's colleges as Vassar and Wells, and honors the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention. The libretto is by Anthony Di Renzo, associate professor of writing.

Princess Ida will be staged:

  • June 23 and 24 at the Schwartz Center, Cornell University
  • June 28 at the Old Havana Courthouse Theatre, Montour Falls
  • July 18 or August 1 at the Morgan Opera House, Aurora.

Cover singers may be needed for out-of-town performances.

Casting will be announced in April, followed by a read-through. Rehearsals will occur in May and June.

The Cornell Savoyards welcomes performers of all ages, background, and experience. To schedule an audition, contact Karen Wonder Dumont at kwd3@cornell.edu.
