Ithaca College is pleased to invite you to hear a free talk by Major General Arthur M. Bartell, U.S. Army (retired), Parent '15, on Tuesday, October 27. His presentation is titled "Leadership: Don't Leave School without It."

General Bartell is a highly decorated officer whose command assignments included overseeing all ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) and JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps) units nationwide. He is currently president of the Army and Navy Academy, a military boarding school for boys in grades 7–12 in Carlsbad, California.

You are invited to either attend in person on IC's campus or watch live online via Livestream. No RSVP is required.

General Bartell's appearance is supported by the Jahn Family Civic Leadership Fund, established by Robert Jahn Jr., Parent '06, '08, '11, to support the ROTC program at Ithaca College.

I was not aware that Ithaca College has an ROTC program. If so, presumably it has been reintroduced only after the repeal of DODT.

I agree that teaching leadership to our students is a good goal, but Bartell lost all credibility when he talked about how ROTC could help teach character and leadership then held up Donald Trump as a shining example of an ROTC graduate. If that is the kind of character he wants to teach my children, I'll pass. I wouldn't have been more appalled if he had recommended opening a chapter of Hitler youth. It was an especially wrenching contrast since I had just come from the campus meeting on Racism and Cultural Bias...
