On Monday October 30, Information Technology released the Windows 10 Self-Service install that allows you to upgrade to Windows 10 without assistance from IT. At the time of this notification, 57 individuals have successfully upgraded their PC’s to Windows 10 and 6 are in progress. This notification is to remind those of you who have not initiated the Windows 10 Self-Service upgrade to do so at a suitable time for you. Please refer to the October 27 Intercom announcement for more details: https://www.ithaca.edu/intercom/article.php/2017102613495520#.WfiUfYhrzy0

Since the release on October 30, we have received feedback from individuals who have completed the upgrade that may assist you.

Elapsed Time to Complete the Upgrade
For most people, the upgrade should take approximately forty-five minutes. In some cases, individuals that have specialized software installed on their PC may require additional time for the Windows 10 upgrade to backup, install, and configure. In some cases, we have received reports that the upgrade has taken up to two hours. These are outlier cases and are not to be expected for the majority of the campus community. Please be advised that the upgrade could span more than forty-five minutes depending on the applications you have installed and the amount of data that will need to be backed up and restored. It is for these reasons that Information Technology strongly recommends that you initiate the upgrade process before you leave the office for the day or prior to taking lunch.

Microsoft Edge and Changing Default Browser
Windows 10 comes with the new Microsoft Edge browser set as the default. Microsoft Edge has known compatibility issues with some Ithaca College applications such as Homer or Parnassus. Information Technology recommends that you change the default browser from Microsoft Edge to the supported browser of your choice which includes Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Google Chrome. All three supported browsers will be installed on your PC as part of the Windows 10 upgrade and available for you to use. We recommend setting your default browser to Microsoft Internet Explorer if you are a frequent user of Parnassus or Homer.

Click here to view the Knowledge Base article for instructions on how to change your default browser and pin it to the start menu or task bar.

Do NOT Power Down Your PC
Your PC will need to remain powered on for the duration of the Windows 10 upgrade. Please do not power down your PC so the installation can run to completion. You should expect your PC to reboot during the process.

Need Help?
If you experience any problems with the upgrade, please contact the Information Technology Service Desk and have the asset tag of your PC available.
