(307 words) IC Love Letters encouraged the campus to write 750 letters to First Year StudentsContributed by Theresa Johnson on 09/16/14 Members of the campus community wrote more than 750 letters to welcome the first-years to campus, as part of a letter writing campaign with IC More Love Letters. Residential Life staff distributed letters on bulletin boards and residence hall rooms where first-year students live. ICMLL’s mission is twofold: to hide kind notes around campus for people to find and to write encouraging letters for people who need them. Williams has made films for the UN Forum on Climate Change and has had works screened at Cannes and Sundance. Over the last fifty years, globalization and the rise of digital networks have changed how we know and critically engage with the changing world around us. Using a series of short films and emerging “digital policy submission” case studies from around the world, this session explores more radical methodologies in environmental change assessment and shares with audiences recent methodological developments coming from Indigenous and local groups in the Arctic, Australia, Latin America and Africa. Come and learn about humanitarian efforts on healthcare and education-based projects in southern Honduras. September 23, 12:10 p.m., CNS 115 Food will be provided. CARE provides medical assistance to rural communities in southwest Honduras. This assistance is provided primarily by trips undertaken by college students mostly in January or during Spring Break. (87 words) Chemistry Seminar Series invites Alumnus Jason Diaz '09Contributed by Maria Russell on 09/15/14 Tuesday, September 16th, CNS 333 at 4:15 p.m. Alumnus Jason Diaz will be giving a presentation on: Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCV) was discovered in 2008 as a novel DNA virus associated with a very rare skin cancer, Merkel cell carcinoma. Research efforts have focused on how this virus causes cancer, but much of its basic virology has yet to be explored. The major viral protein, Large Tumor antigen (LT) is a multifunction protein that interacts with numerous cellular proteins to manipulate the cell for the virus’s advantage; additionally, LT is a key initiator of viral DNA replication. These multiple activities must be tightly regulated to ensure a productive infectious cycle. Using mass spectrometry, I uncovered three novel threonines that are phosphorylated during LT expression in cells; this talk will demonstrate how some of these modifications control LT’s ability to initiate viral replication. PODER: Latino Student Organization is a student group on campus that works to celebrate and educate others about Latino/a culture. Emily Ramos (Writing ’15) has been a member of PODER for three semesters, and this fall will be her second semester as co-president. Ramos said, “the purpose of our organization is to promote diversity and awareness of Latino/a culture on campus. One of our main goals is to provide a space for Latino/a students … to come and support each other and continue to develop and grow as individuals on this campus.” They're busiest time of year begins in just a few days.
The 2014 Cross Cultural Leadership Retreat (CCLR) will be held on October 31-November 2. This two and a half day retreat presents the opportunity to explore various aspects of diversity and their relationship to leadership. During the retreat, the entire group will participate in a series of educational sessions and discuss issues as a large group, as well as in smaller, informal conversations.

A cartoonist and graphic memoirist, Alison Bechdel will speak on campus Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. in Textor 102. Her lecture is titled: “Dykes, Dads, and Moms to Watch Out For: The illustrated life of Alison Bechdel.”

Assistant Professor Donathan Brown of Communication Studies has been invited to be the plenary speaker at the closing session of the The International Conference on Arts, Culture, Heritage and the National Development Plan: Vision for 2030. The meeting will take place at Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, South Africa, October 1 - 3. 
Professor of trumpet Frank Gabriel Campos and professor of guitar Pablo Cohen appeared on American Public Media's 'Performance Today' on Thursday, September 11. They performed the Siete Canciones Espanoles (Seven Popular Songs) by Spanish composer Manuel De Falla. Campos and Cohen created the trumpet and guitar arrangement of the popular work, originally for voice and piano.
