We'll be kicking off another great year of volunteering in our local community by helping out with Some BIG events and IMPORTANT causes.

Students can choose to volunteer with one of three different sites:

  • Feed My Starving Children Mobile Pack Event - An opportunity to pack nutritious, low cost meals for food insecure areas across the world.
  • AIDS Ride for Life - Volunteer at the check-in station of the biggest HIV/AIDS treatment and awareness fundraiser in southern New York. Cheer on the cyclists and help make this event a success!
  • The Salvation Army of Ithaca - the Salvation Army serves over 100,000 meals annual to residents of Ithaca, NY. Help them prepare and serve one of their Saturday meals!

Service Saturdays is your opportunity to make a difference the fun and easy way!

This Saturday, September 6th, from 10 am to 4 pm the Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute (FLPCI) will be hosting tours to a number of permaculture installations around the area. One stop will feature IC’s permaculture installation outside of Williams Hall (across from the IC Bookstore entrance).

A public conversation marking Constitution Day, "Targeted Killings, the Constitution, and You: U.S. Drone Policy and Citizens’ Rights,” will be held on Wed., Sept. 17, 2014, 7:30–9:30 pm in Emerson Suites, Campus Center.

Recent drone technology has several promising business and benign applications. But it also has some frightening ones -- such as targeting and killing people. The U.S. government claims “targeted killings” are necessary for national defense and fighting terrorism, yet many innocent civilians in several countries have been killed by drones. Outrage has grown about these deaths and about the fact that President Obama has claimed constitutional authority as commander in chief to use drones to kill U.S. citizens accused of potential or actual terrorist acts.

Spanish Studies Abroad, SIT (the School for International Training) and IES (the Institute for the International Education of Students) are all long-standing affiliates of Ithaca College, and each semester many IC students study abroad on programs run by these organizations.  Over the next two weeks, representatives from each of these organizations will be on campus to present an information session and to table in the Campus Center lobby.

The Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen film series at Ithaca College will kick off the new year on Tuesday, Sept. 9, with the documentary “Off and Running,” the story of an adopted girl’s complicated exploration of race, identity and family that threatens to distance her from the parents she’s always known. Free and open to the public, the film will be shown at 7 p.m. in Textor 101.

The 13th annual Cross Cultural Leadership Retreat (CCLR) for Ithaca College students will be held on October 31 to November 2, 2014. This two and a half day retreat presents the opportunity to explore various aspects of diversity and their relationship to leadership. During the retreat, the entire group will participate in a series of educational sessions and discuss issues as a large group. There will also be an opportunity to connect in smaller, informal groups.

A test of the Ithaca College Emergency Notification System (ENS) will take place during the noon hour on Tuesday, Sept. 9. It will include a test of the Outdoor Warning System, which features a siren tone and a loudspeaker message. There is no need to take any action in response to the test.

Looking for individuals to participate in a study that involves listening to real people’s stories and rating how clear they are to you! Testing time is about 1 hour. Your participation will help future clinicians understand the relationship between cognition and story-telling, as well as help to promote graduate student research at Ithaca College!
