On April 3rd, 10th and 17th, from 3:00 – 5:00 pm, in Textor 101, Ithaca College will be joining an community initiative across Ithaca and Tompkins County that is over 1,000 members strong, to view the eye-opening and powerful three-part series (one hour episodes, one episode each night) PBS documentary, Race: The Power of An Illusion. Each episode will be followed by a discussion about the film and its relevance today, that will be facilitated by a representative of the Multicultural Resources Center of Ithaca, in affiliation with Cornell’s Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County.

It is not easy to talk about or make sense of race. Ask 10 people to define it and you’re likely to get 10 different answers. On few topics have there been so many assumptions, myths and misperceptions. And yet the ramifications of race- the meaning that we place on the color of one’s skin- continues to be real, and still has very real consequences for our country and our community.

For the first time, ITHACON, Ithaca's own comic book convention, will be held on the Ithaca College Campus on Saturday, April 5 from 10am to 3pm.  The Comic Book Club of Ithaca is the oldest comic book fan club in the United States and has sponsored 38 previous conventions.  This year, in collaboration with the Ithaca College departments of English, Writing, Journalism, and Art, they are bringing the convention to the Emerson Suites, Campus Center.

The Office of Admission concluded its review of a record applicant pool last week.  The College received 18,208 applications for the fall 2014 freshman class, up significantly from the 15,658 (+16.3%) applications received last year and 13,812 (+31.8%) applications received two years ago.  Not only is this year’s applicant pool larger, it also boasts impressive academic credentials and contributes to the growing diversity of our campus.

Please join me on Thursday, April 3rd for the fifth Faculty Colloquium of the academic year.  Dr. Jorge Garcia, Assistant Professor of Spanish, Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, will be presenting “Contesting Liberalism in 19th Century Mexico:  A Conservative Utopia.” 

Professor Garcia received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas in Austin in 2010.  His research interests include in Mexico and Central American literature, culture and intellectual history; Latin American contemporary crónicas; civic responsibility and community engagement through filmmaking in underserved communities. He recently presented work in a conference titled “Counterstories of Greater Mexico” at Cornell University.
