Apply NOW for the 2014 Service Organization of the Year Award!Contributed by Theresa Johnson on 03/24/14 The Outstanding Service Organization of the Year Award is presented to one registered student organization that demonstrates exemplary community service beyond the Ithaca College campus. All organizations will be evaluated based on the quality of services provided during academic year in which the award is presented. For the purposes of this award year, projects and activities that occur between August 31, 2013, and April 20, 2014 will be accepted. In addition, candidates are evaluated based on the impact of these services within the intended population or geographic area. Students interested in apply for the award must complete the application before Friday, April 4, at 5:00pm in order to be considered for selection. The awardee will be honored at OSEMA’s Recognition Ceremony on Monday, April 28, in Emerson Suites. APPLY HERE. It featured an array of speakers and Mary Bowers from the Class of 2013 was one of them. The title of her inspirational talk was, "Rethinking the Student Body," which summarized in TED talk style the incredible 18 month long research she conducted for her anthropology major on the experiences of students with disabilities at Ithaca College. She (re)defines "disability" as "uncelebrated human variation" and moves us to (re)consider normality and disability as myth. She received a standing ovation on Saturday. May her work and talk continue to move us reconsider our student body here at Ithaca College. The Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen series will host a showing of the documentary “Overruled! Levy's work titled Welcome to Saudi Arabia is included in the issue. The reading will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, in the Art Exhibit Room of Macmillan Hall on the Wells College campus. This event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be provided. In addition to Levy, editors and writers associated with current issue #8 of Stone Canoe include General Editor Robert Colley, nonfiction writer Christopher Gonzales, poets Bruce Bennett, James Crenner, and Sarah Jefferis, and fiction writers Jennifer Savran Kelly, Kailey McDonald, and Joey Marzocchi. (198 words) Patricia Zimmermann delivers lectures and workshops in Guinea for US State DepartmentContributed by Melissa Gattine on 03/24/14 Patricia Zimmermann, professor of screen studies and codirector of the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival (FLEFF), delivered invited lectures and conducted workshops on documentary new media forms in Guinea in February 2014. She was posted to West Africa as part of the American Film Showcase, a US State Department initiative to foster cultural exchange and understanding. Zimmermann presented a formal lecture on new media entitled "New Emerging Forms of Documentary Participatory Media in Action" at US AID and the US Embassy in Conakry, Guinea, for the Guinean Film Association, a group of professional producers, directors and writers. Showcasing US-based transmedia projects exhibited in previous Finger Lake Environmental Film Festivals at Ithaca College, her talk theorized the function of collaborative, interactive, and permeable new media practices to open up spaces for new encounters. Important reasons not to miss the next screening: 1. 65 million Americans have hypertension (high blood pressure) 2. Many people don't even know their blood pressure is high because there are no symptoms in most cases 3. Hypertension can lead to heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease 4. 66% of those IC employees measured at the last screening were pre-hypertensive (above ideal ) 5. A 20 point increase in systolic blood pressure (top number) or a 10 point increase in diastolic blood pressure (bottom number) doubles the risk of heart disease. 6. Poor diet, inactivity, and being overweight can lead to an increase in blood pressure 7. If one does not adopt a healthy lifestyle, the hypertensive individual will need to take costly medication with potential side effects 8.
