It’s December and the holidays are quickly approaching! While we all love holiday cheer and a break from work, this time of year often comes with an constant flow of sweet treats, specialty drinks, and other festive foods that can spell disaster for those with diabetes. Follow these tips to stay on track through the New Year:

  • Plan ahead – if you know that your favorite holiday dessert will be at a party, plan your meals and medications throughout the day accordingly
  • Offer to bring a diabetes-friendly dish to share
  • Eat a healthy snack before leaving home to prevent overeating at the party
  • Stay active! Use the extra time off to exercise, or catch up with friends and family while going for a walk together
  • Test blood sugar regularly to keep track of your levels, especially since you’re eating foods that you may not normally eat
  • If you overindulge, get back on track right away – one mistake doesn’t have to lead to more!
