Timothy Johnson, Professor of Music Theory, was inducted into Pi Mu Epsilon, a national mathematics honor society. The membership of the society at Ithaca College inducted Professor Johnson "in recognition of his work in music and mathematics." Johnson has published a textbook on math and music, Foundations of Diatonic Theory: A Mathematically Based Approached to Music Fundamentals, first with Key College Publishing (a mathematics press, 2004) then with Scarecrow Press (in their music list, 2008). This book presently is being used in "Musical Shapes - Mathematical Models," a course in the Ithaca Seminar program. Professor Johnson also has given presentations on music and mathematics at the Joint Mathematics Meetings of the American Mathematical Society and Mathematics Association of America, several regional societies in music theory, and as an invited speaker at the sophomore math seminar at Ithaca College.

Get ready to clap and sing along with the Ithaca College Jazz Ensemble!  This free one-hour concert will be an enjoyable way for all kids to learn about this great American music.  The performance will be at 10AM on October 6th, 2012 at Ford Hall in the Whalen Center for Music at Ithaca College.

Inspired by the children's jazz concerts done by Wynton Marsalis and Leonard Bernstein, the Ithaca College Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Vocal Ensemble will play, sing, demonstrate instruments — basically, do anything and everything to help answer the question "What is jazz?"

Instructions
Listed here are ten quotes that will be recited during the recital. But, the performers aren't going to recite them. You are! Here's how:

Pick a quote or two and make a video of yourself reciting it. Quality is not the objective: creativity is. Make your video recording during a hike, skydiving, on the beach, in an airport, or even in the middle of the Amazon. It's entirely up to you! We want your interpretation and artistic touch.
