Faculty: Mara Alper @ malper@ithaca.edu Mara Alper Presents at Global Social Action Film Festival, Bali, IndonesiaContributed by Mara Alper on 04/24/11 Mara Alper was an invited faculty member and panelist at the Global Social Action Film Festival and Institute in Bali, April 12 - 17. Her workshop on “Approaches to Environmental Media Making” focused on water issues and was attended by Institute Fellows from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, as well as US filmmakers. She was also a panelist on “Environmental Films and Social Activism.” The mission of the Global Social Change Film Festival and Institute is to support filmmakers to be effective social activists and support social activists to be engaging storytellers. While in Bali, Mara will gather video on the intricate traditional water rituals and irrigation systems in Bali for teaching her Water=Life summer online course and wider venues related to water issues.
Senior Allison Usavage (shown at right) won first place for photography for her photograph “Standing Strong,” which appeared in the March 4, 2010, Ithacan. Senior Michelle Skowronek won third place for feature writing for “Gay Enough?” which appeared in the paper's April 15, 2010, issue. In addition, the paper won second place for design, second place for sports coverage, third place for editorial and third place for general excellence. A recent study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that exercise afterburn (calories burned after you are finished exercising) increases with more vigorous physical activity. In two other studies, researchers found that if subjects exercised (ran or biked) between 70-75% of their VO2 max (you would not be able to carry a conversation at this pace, while at about 50% of VO2 max, you would), subjects burned an additional 300-700 calories post-exercise.
