The Distinguished Speaker in the Humanities Lecture, An Interview with Tony Kushner, that was scheduled for tonight, February 21 at 7:30 HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Mr. Kushner had an emergency and has to remain in New York City. We will be working with his agent to reschedule his visit to Ithaca at a later date. Details forthcoming.

The Ithacan Online has been named one of seven finalists for the Columbia Scholastic Press Association's 2011 Online Crown Award. 

Founded in 1925, the CSPA is owned by Columbia University and operated as a program affiliated with its Graduate School of Journalism. The Crown Awards, first presented in 1982, are the organization's highest honor. The Online Crown recognizes overall excellence in newspaper websites. The Ithacan Online was awarded the CSPA Gold Crown in 2009 and 2010.

Winners will be announced at the Spring National College Media Convention in New York City, March 13–15.

As the rigors of academic life get more and more intense, consider taking time each day to practice mindfulness. Neuroscientists have found compelling evidence that spending ten minutes to sit quietly and clear your head can lift mood, improve focus, and lessen stress. New York Times writer Sindya N. Bhanoo cites a study which found that people who practice regular meditation had increased grey matter in the brain's hippocampus - an area associated with "memory, sense of self, empathy, and stress."

See the new film that follows several openly gay and lesbian high school athletes through their senior year in high school and beyond - Saturday February 26, 4 pm in Taughannock Falls Room, 3rd Floor Campus Center.  Utilizing footage shot by the filmmaker and video diaries kept throughout the year by the students, the film shows a new generation of courage in the most homophobic place on a high school campus: the locker room.

Hillel has invited Rabbi Jeff Roth of the Awakened Heart Project to conduct a Shabbat meditation week-end Friday evening March 4 - Sunday morning the 6th.  Jeff's the real deal - he's been teaching mindfulness meditation to Jewish and other groups for many years, and he is excellent at what he does.
