Lillian is retiring from the College, effective July 24, after 31 years of service.

It is my sad duty to inform you of the death of Pat Nally, assistant to the dean in the School of Business. Pat passed away unexpectedly yesterday afternoon. Pat has been a vital part of the School of Business since 1985, and will be remembered for her commitment to students, and her spirit of collaboration and cooperation. 

I know that she will be greatly missed, and I am sure the Ithaca community joins me in sending our condolences to her family and friends. Information on any planned services is not available at this time -- I advise you to watch the local paper for more information.

A total of 10 new members have been elected to the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame. The annual induction ceremony will be held October 10, in the Emerson Suites on campus as part of Ithaca's Homecoming Weekend.

The 10 inductees represent nine sports. Joining the Hall of Fame will be Sue Bender '93, Barry Cohen '80, Michael Ferrara '80, TJ Gamba '87, Lisa Gould '87, Renee Helbok '99, Chris Matteotti '96, Margaret Pilling '81, Todd Stephan '96, and Nicki Swan '97.

Weight Watchers at Work (WW@W) at Ithaca College is gearing up for a continuing 17-week series in mid-August. We meet midday on Tuesdays. Our last meeting for the current series is scheduled for August 11. All Ithaca College community members are welcome to join.

What a great WW@W series this has been so far! We have a permanent home in the Peggy Ryan Williams Center for our meetings; our leader is fabulous; one of our members has reached her goal and is working toward Lifetime status; and as a group, we have dropped a total of 480 pounds!

Booming sounds this afternoon (Thursday, July 2) from South Hill will be the all-clear signal for the 62nd annual Ithaca Community Fireworks show. Beginning at 2:00 p.m., an aerial salute that can be heard for miles around will be fired every hour on the hour by fireworks technicians as a reminder that the show is a "go."

Arhlene Flowers, assistant professor of strategic communication, and Katalin (Kati) Lustyik, assistant profesor of television and radio, presented a paper, titled "Battling Junk Food Advertising in Cyberspace: Positions in the UK and Hungary," at the conference "Beyond East and West: Two Decades of Media Transformation after the Fall of Communism," which took place at Central European University in Budapest, Hungary, June 25-27.

Lustyik presented a second paper, titled "Promoting Regional Content but Raising a Global Consumer: Minimax, a New Regional Children's Television Network in Eastern Europe."

Professor of politics Asma Barlas, director of the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity, part of the Division of Interdisciplinary and International Studies, was invited by the Nordic Society for the Philosophy of Religion to give the keynote at its annual conference on Religion and the Politics of the Body at the University of Iceland, Reykjavek, on June 26.

Spectators at the 62nd annual Ithaca Community Fireworks Show on Thursday night, July 2, are reminded to park safely and sanely. In particular, parking on state and county highways and road shoulders is not permitted, especially on Route 96B near Ithaca College and along Routes 13, 34, 79, and 96.
