Ithaca College

Mead Loop, associate professor in the Department of Journalism, teamed up with sophomore journalism major Maura Gladys to conduct research on the credibility and practices of the reporters who cover fantasy sports -- the first such research of its kind in the country.

Their work is featured in the December issue of Quill magazine, the national publication of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Zachary Tomanelli '11, a journalism major, had an article published in Sporting Kid magazine's fall 2008 issue. The article, entitled "Wanted: Trustworthy Volunteers," deals with embezzlement in youth sports leagues. Tomanelli wrote the article for his journalism research class, which required students to write a 20-page, magazine-style article on a topic of their choice.

A documentary produced by Chris Cucci '08, Chris Burt '08, Sarah Woodhouse '08, and Krystal Maughn '08 -- titled Busking the Big Apple -- won for best documentary at the 2008 OSTN NBS (Open Student Television Network; National Broadcast Society) International Media Fest held in Cleveland, Ohio.

The film was produced as part of associate professor Peter Johanns' Video Workshop course in spring 2008, and was aired as part of ICTV's 24-hour broadcast marathon in April 2008.

Professor Jodi Cohen, Department of Speech Communication, was recently honored with the National Communication Association's "top paper" award in political communication. The 2008 work is a critical analysis of public meetings about environmental risks.

The Park Center for Independent Media at Ithaca College is now accepting nominations from journalists, academics and the public at large for the first annual Izzy Award, named after legendary maverick journalist I. F. Stone. To be presented each year for "special achievement in independent media," the Izzy Award will recognize an independent outlet, journalist or producer for work created/distributed outside of traditional corporate structures.

Data about Ithaca College students' health attitudes and behaviors can be used to create teaching exercises or modules. Two $300 stipends will be awarded during the spring semester for implementation in spring or fall 2009. The deadline for one-page proposals is Friday, February 13, 2009.

The Health Promotion and Substance Abuse Prevention Program collects data annually regarding health behaviors of Ithaca College students. These data are offered to faculty members via the Health Data in the Classroom Project in collaboration with the Center for Faculty Excellence.
