The Handwerker Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition, Running the Numbers: An American Self-Portrait, at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 28.

In his large-format photographs, Seattle-based artist Chris Jordan explores contemporary American culture through the austere lens of statistics. Each image documents a specific quantity of goods consumed by Americans in a given time frame: Cell Phones, 2007, depicts 426,000 of them, equal to the number of cell phones retired every day; Paper Bags (detail above), 2007, depicts 1.14 million brown paper supermarket bags, the number used every hour; and Plastic Bottles, 2007, depicts two million plastic beverage bottles, the number used every five minutes. These photographs give the cold, hard facts of American consumption a tangible reality.

On Monday, February 25, 2008, at about 8:20 p.m., officers from the Ithaca College Office of Public Safety identified the person responsible for the physical assault reported in the public safety alert issued February 25. The incident occurred in a parking lot near Circle Apartment 3.

As a result of the investigation, the victim of the assault declined to press criminal charges and the assailant was restricted from campus.

Ithaca College School of Music clarinet professor Michael Galván will present a free recital on Sunday, March 2, at 7:00 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall. Pianist Andrea Merrill will collaborate. The program includes seldom heard music by Weiner, Mczynski, Sachsen-Meiningen, and Rota. "Viktor's Tale" by renowned film composer John Williams rounds out the program.

In honor of Black History Month, the Saakumu Dance Troupe from Ghana will visit Ithaca College to present a free performance on Friday, February 29. The presentation will begin at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music.
