 Junior Madison Fernandez, who majors in journalism with health policy and management, and honors minors, will assume the position of editor in chief of The Ithacan for the 2020–21 academic year. 

Fernandez was the only candidate interviewed by the Board of Student Publications during a Zoom meeting April 10. Diane Gayeski, dean of the Roy H. Park School of Communications, accepted the board’s recommendation and appointed Fernandez to the position.

 The Ithacan was honored with a Silver Crown award by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in conjunction with the spring National College Media Convention at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. The award was presented in an online ceremony after the March 13 presentation session was canceled due to coronavirus concerns. 

The paper was also won the First Place in the conference’s Best of Show competition. This was The Ithacan’s second Best of Show win this academic year, having won First Place at the fall National College Media Convention in Washington, D.C. in November.

The Ithacan has once again been named the Best College Newspaper in New York State by the New York Press Association in its annual Better College Newspaper competition. In addition to the top award, the paper won First Place in six of the competition’s categories and Second Place in another. Six Ithacan staff members were also honored for their individual work.

The judges said: “Top-notch journalism, fascinating graphics, clean style and subject diversity pushed The Ithacan to the winning spot in this very competitive category. A thoughtful opinion page, complete with a local editorial cartoon, is just one of its assets. The paper does a stellar job covering its community, pursuing enterprise, holding power to account and serving its readers and advertisers.”

Walter Byongsok Chon, Assistant Professor of Dramaturgy and Theatre Studies in the Theatre Arts Department, publishes his chapter “The Stakes of Expanding a Cultural Landscape: Dramaturging, Adapting and Performing Gao Xingjian’s The Other Shore” in the book, Diversity, Inclusion, and Representation in Contemporary Dramaturgy: Case Studies from the Field (Routledge Press).
