"Why I Became Asian-American…"

 As you all are excited for our upcoming break we are excited for this weeks meeting which will include a guest lecture by Dr. Phuong Nguyen! Dr. Nguyen is currently teaching two courses this semester,The "Introduction to Asian-American Studies"   along with "Race and Love in Asian-America". As the coordinator of the newly developedAsian-American Studies minor Dr. Nguyen's long background in ethnic studies has given him a foundation for discussing issues of race and identity. During this meeting he will talk about his personal experiences with such topics as he tries to raise questions and bring light to ideas we never fully talk about as well as answer the question of "Why I Became Asian-American.."


It will be a great dialogue and we hope all of you can attend and bring your friends for this great opportunity!   Meet us in Williams 313 this Thursday at 7pm as we get to not only get to know Dr. Nguyen better but share our stories as well

Most students feel overly stressed at some point during their college careers. One of the best things you can do to control stress is exercise. Exercising releases endorphins--the "feel-good" chemicals in your brain, and pushes out the stressful energy while allowing you to relax and feel more at ease. 

Stress can also cause trouble concentrating, anxiety and depression, and it can increase anger and irritability. By exercising, you can start defeating all of these negative emotions and come out on top!

All interested Ithaca College students – especially those residing in South Hill neighborhoods - to encouraged to attend and participate in a listening/feedback session tonight, Monday, November 18 from 7:00PM – 8:30PM in the South Hill Elementary School cafeteria. Cornell University students in the Department of City and Regional Planning (CRP) are exploring the concept of ecological and economic sustainability in a city, and how Ithaca and the surrounding area in Tompkins County might evolve into a more sustainable urban center in the coming decades. Given the unique challenges facing the South Hill neighborhood - from traffic to demographic changes to housing to topography - it is one of two areas in Ithaca chosen as a study site.

Naeem Inayatullah (Politics) participated in two events at Vassar College . He presented “The Pedagogical Origins of Autobiographical International Relations” on a panel titled “Fiction in Global Politics, Global Politics as Fiction.” And, he participated in a faculty workshop, “The Narrative Turn in Politics,” November 14-15, 2013. 
 

 

Jeffery Meyer, Director of Orchestras at Ithaca College, will conduct the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic at the 25th International New Music Festival “Sound Ways” led by Russian composer and faculty member at the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory Alexander Radvilovich. The program will include two world premieres by Russian composer Anatoly Koroliov and the young, emerging American composer Daniel Temkin. American pianist James Giles will return to the stage of Gilnka Hall to perform the world premiere of the final version of American composer Timothy Dunne’s Piano Concerto written for Giles and the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic.  The rest of the program is focused around two titans of the 20th century: Lutoslawski and Berio.

The On the Verge playreading series presents a reading of Tom Stoppard's "dazzling dissection of adultery, the theatre, radical politics and other so-called real things" (Linda Winer, Newsday). The reading was directed by Claire Gleitman, a faculty member in the English department, and the cast will include faculty members from both Theatre and English (Kathleen Mulligan and Chris Holmes), students from the departments of Theatre and English (Taylor Misiak, Jordan Schultz, Katy Newton, and Caleb Cushing), and a local professional actor (Jesse Bush).
