Stereotypes are an ever present part of the world we live in today. Through stereotypes concepts such as the Model Minority Myth have created ways too mis-represent people of color and Asian-Americans. Come to Williams 313 this Thursday at 7pm as IC Asian-American Alliance prepares to talk about the Model Minority Myth and have detailed discussions involving stereotypes as we share personal experiences with each other.

Claudia Costa Pederson, Assistant Professor of Screen Studies, has published a feature interview entitled "The Veterans Book Project: A Conversation with Monica Haller" in Afterimage, The Journal of Media Arts and Cultural Criticism 41, no 2 (September, October).

This feature interview examines Monica Haller's project, The Veterans Book Project (2007-2013), a 50 volume series of books authored by veterans and Iraqi refugees. An investigation of the archive and its intersections with personal and social trauma, each book in the series consists of digital photos and texts.

The Park Center for Independent Media is excited to announce that on Thursday, Oct. 3, we will be joined by Robert W. McChesney, prolific author, media policy expert, and the Gutgsell Endowed Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Campaign.

McChesney will give a public address, "Corporate Dominance of Internet, Politics and Media," beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Park Auditorium. He'll share what he learned while researching his 23rd and 24th books, both published this year: Digital Disconnect: How Capitalism Is Turning the Internet Away from Democracy and (co-written with John Nichols) Dollarocracy: How the Money-and-Media-Election Complex Is Destroying America.

Both books will both be available for sale after the talk and Q&A, and McChesney will be signing copies. The event is free and open to all.

In May, Nathan Hess, piano faculty in the School of Music, performed a solo recital at York College of Pennsylvania, followed by a solo recital and masterclass at the High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in Pittsburgh, PA, and a masterclass for pre-college students for the Buffalo Music Forum for Piano Teachers in Buffalo, NY.

Hess returned to the faculty at Rocky Ridge Music Center near Estes Park, CO, to teach in the Junior Session held in early August. While there he taught piano, coached chamber music, and performed solo and chamber music works in the Music in the Mountains faculty concert series. Also in August he was a featured soloist in a benefit concert at Winterstown United Methodist Church in Felton, PA, celebrating 185 years of organized religion in the town and 50 years of worship in the present building. 

In September he presented a solo recital and masterclass at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH.

Colm Tóibín — author of the New York Times best seller “Brooklyn” — will speak to first-year students at Ithaca College on Monday Oct. 7, 2013.

As part of the First-Year Reading Initiative (FYRI), the author will hold a talk and Q&A session on Oct 7th at 7:30 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall, Whalen Center. This event is free and open to the public. There will be a book signing immediately afterwards in McHenry Lobby from 8:30 to 9:00 p.m.

Winner of the 2009 Costa Novel Award, “Brooklyn” tells the story of Eilis, a young woman who immigrates to Brooklyn from her home in a small Irish town in the early 1950s. At the event, Tóibín will share how his own memories of homesickness inform Eilis’s experiences.

(Part I) Decoding the Human Language of Expression
In the study of emotional expression, strong evidence exists in support of both universal displays and cultural variations in emotional expression. We collected and coded over 5500 free-response facial and body displays of emotion as part of an emotion expression production study of 21 emotions and other cognitive states in China, India, Japan, Korea, and the USA. Participants demonstrated nonverbal displays of emotion in response to stories representing these 21 states. Our analyses reveal common core patterns of expressive behavior for each state, extensive “cultural accents” across all 5 cultures, and systematic individual differences in expressive style. We also tested the universal recognition of 30 facial and vocal expressions that have been documented in previous studies to covary with the experience of distinct emotion in ten nations representing five continents.
