Cathy Lee Crane, associate professor in the Department of Media Arts, Sciences and Studies, was named a 2013 Guggenheim Fellow in Film/Video.

John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has awarded fellowships to a diverse group of 175 scholars, artists, and scientists. Appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise, the successful candidates were chosen from a group of almost 3,000 applicants.

The Guggenheim Fellowship will support Crane's upcoming project -- a production of a speculative history on how the United States entered World War I as told through the story of one girl's adoption by a butcher in 1917.

Students of Ithaca College will be invited to participate in producing scenes of this film in the Park School soundstage as part of a Cinema Production Practicum course offered in the SP14 semester. If you are interested in enrolling in that class, please contact Professor Crane directly at ccrane@ithaca.edu to attend an informational session in FA13.

Language changes. That simple, inevitable fact has rich implications for our lives, in ways that most people aren’t aware of. While some people believe that differences in regional speech are dying out today in the U.S., much evidence shows that dialects are becoming much stronger and new dialect features are emerging rapidly, including basic pronunciation of words like bad and bag, Don and Dawn, or his and hiss, and these tell us much about recent history, about contemporary society and our own identities.   Presentation is free and open to the public, on Wednesday, April 24th in the Klingenstein Lounge, from 6-7 pm.

There are so many things to do as the semester ends, don’t forget about your mail! We offer the following suggestions to help provide continuity in your mail-related services.

Begin notifying the publishers of magazines and newspapers you receive where you will be in May. Their toll free numbers and web sites are usually listed in the front or back of the publication. This mail class is not forwarded by the USPS from our College. The USPS notifies the publishers of the permanent address we provide on the publication and then discards the mail piece.
