(26 words) Nicholas Walker, School of Music, Performs "Bass Marathon" in Rostock, GermanyContributed by Molly O'Shea Polk on 04/08/13 Professor of Double Bass, Nicholas Walker, traveled to Rostock, Germany to perform in a rare event, a five hour concert of music performed on the double bass, a kind of "BASS MARATHON". Joining Professor Silvio Dalla Torre, and the the bass class of Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock at the end of their winter semester, fourteen double bassists offered a buffet of music for friends of the low tones. The concert in the Chamber Music Hall of HTM Rostock was very well attended by residents of the larger Mecklenburg-Vorpommern community, and culminated in a standing ovation. Read more . . . Students involved in the organization will be paired with an older adult in the Ithaca, NY are with whom they will visit for an hour each week. Volunteers will help to fulfill seniors’ personal and functional needs through providing mental stimulation, companionship, social support, and/or light housework. As companions and helpers of the elderly, the organization highly values and respects seniors’ desire to age in place and maintain independence. The mission of the organization is to enrich older adults’ and volunteers’ lives through bridging the gap between generations. (48 words) Prospects for Peace in Colombia - April 10 7pm CNS 112Contributed by Patricia Rodriguez on 04/08/13 Presentation by Dana Brown, Executive Director of the US Office on Colombia, a human rights advocacy organization based in Washington, DC. Brown’s talk with address the many facets of the current peace negotiations between the Colombian government and the FARC guerrilla, with a special focus on civil society engagement in the peace process. She will highlight the struggle of victims’ to secure some measure of truth, justice and reparations in this process, and the possibilities for a parallel peace process with the ELN. Lastly, she will expose critical issues excluded from the negotiating agenda that could have grave implications for the prospects of a lasting peace.
