 The Ithacan has been named a finalist to receive a Mark of Excellence Award from the Society of Professional Journalists Northeast Region (Region 1) at the group's annual meeting, to be held at Rutgers University's New Brunswick, N.J., campus on April 12–13.

The award is for overall excellence. The actual place awarded will be announced at the ceremony. The winner of the regional competition will go on to compete against the winners in SPJ's other 11 regions for the national Mark of Excellence Award.

The Ithacan received the national Mark of Excellence Award for Best Non-Daily Newspaper in the country from SPJ in 2012.

Dawn Kline will join the School of Business on April 29th, as the new Assistant Dean for Student Services.  Dawn comes to us from the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, where she held the title of Director of Undergraduate Academic Advising and Counseling, since 2005.

Faculty Council is soliciting nominations, including self-nominations for the 3-year position as Faculty Trustee on the IC Board of Trustees. The Faculty Trustee is a fully participating and voting member of the Board of Trustees with all of the attendant rights and responsibilities.

Given the challenges ahead, this is a crucial position and we are seeking actively engaged, enthusiastic and knowledgeable individuals for a pool of candidates, from which three will be selected by Council to be forwarded to the Board for their decision regarding the one position.

Please submit the candidate's name, along with a cv and brief statement in support of the candidate to Peter Rothbart, Chair, Faculty Council, rothbart@ithaca.edu.

Show your support for alumna Elizabeth Altbacker ('94), a music educator on Long Island raising funds to rebuild her classroom after the devastating storm this past fall. A benefit concert, coordinated by School of Music senior Jamie Ocheske and the music fraternity Mu Phi Epsilon, will take place Friday.

Josh Feldman ’04, vice president for the new Xbox Entertainment Studios in LA, will be on campus this week visiting classes and giving a public presentation on Friday, March 22 from 4-5:30 in Park Auditorium.

Throughout his career, Feldman has been working at the intersection of story and technology. Prior to Xbox Entertainment Studies, he served as the executive producer of Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, a multi-part live-action digital series for Microsoft. He was also a co-writer and producer on Tom Hanks' Electric City, a 20-episode animated series for Playtone and Reliance Entertainment.

Associate Professor Cathy Lee Crane will screen her latest film, “Pasolini’s Last Words,” at Cornell Cinema on March 27 at 7:15 p.m. A discussion will follow. Admission fee applies.

The film was shot on location in Rome and Bologna, Italy and in New York with actors Bochay Drum, Amanda Setton (IC Alum), and Lee DeLong. Beth Custer (My Grandmother) composed the film’s original score.

The film enjoyed its International Film Festival premiere in October at Le Festival du Nouveau Cinema in Montreal, Quebec in the Panorama International section as one of thirty “gems of world cinema”. It then screened at MIX/NYC the New York Queer Experimental Film Festival and in London at the Lesbian and Gay Film Festival at the British Film Institute.

Amy Goodman, the host and executive producer of Democracy Now!, will speak on Sunday, March 24 at 8 p.m. in Park Hall Auditorium. The talk is free and open to the public. Limited seating available. A book sale and signing will follow the lecture.

Democracy Now! is a national, daily, independent, award-winning news program airing on over 1,100 public television and radio stations worldwide. Goodman is also the author of numerous books including, The Silenced Majority: Stories of Uprisings, Occupations, Resistance, and Hope, written with Denis Moynihan.
